Write Your Own Story
"My favorite Hofstra memory? Can I say every memory? All of the above? I guess it’s less so a memory and really just the people I’ve met here. I’ve traveled with the Pep Band. Studied with friends. Gone out to eat. And it’s always with these people who I genuinely consider family. Whether it is helping to run movies for Entertainment Unlimited or playing with the Pep Band on debate day, my family has grown to include some truly wonderful people. So my favorite memories are not the events themselves but the people I’ve shared these moments with.
I’ve learned a lot during my time here. The most valuable thing I’ve learned is to never be content. When I first came to Hofstra, I was going to be a film studies and production major. I switched to drama. Then I decided to pursue a master’s degree in creative writing. But now I’m studying public relations. Hofstra lets you explore your options and decide which directions you want to take. And those directions can change. I’m really fortunate that my family, not just my friends at Hofstra but also my actual family, have always been supportive of me. My parents always said to just keep going. Another example of this is more personal. I came out as gay the summer before my junior year. It was just something about Hofstra and the friends I made here that made me realize who I was but also that it’s okay to break societal norms. That’s how we grow. You need to be open to growth because you never know what’s waiting for you around the corner.
I’m writing my own story here at Hofstra, which is weird because everything I’ve ever wanted to pursue has been about telling stories. Whether it’s playing the trombone, being involved in drama, or studying public relations – it’s all about evoking an emotion through the stories I’m telling. So that’s it – my story is telling stories."

The Power to Communicate
"I started writing for my high school’s newspaper in the ninth grade. We were given the opportunity to attend the Hofstra High School Summer Journalism Institute, which promotes diversity in media. So that’s where I really developed my writing skills.
Writing helps me to communicate with people better. So even though journalism isn’t my major, the skills I’ve gained during my time at the Institute will definitely help me in my future career. Who knows? Maybe I’ll even contribute to some medical journals one day.
I’ll be attending Hofstra in the fall as a psychology major on the pre-med track. I like the environment here on campus. The community is very much alive. That’s ultimately what made me want to apply. I remember walking around campus while I was here for the Journalism Institute, and I heard these students speaking a variety of languages. It was so cool, and it made me realize how much I wanted to be here. But what helped me to make my final decision once I was accepted was attending Admitted Student Day and seeing how dedicated the faculty were to the students and the material they taught. They were all just ready to take us under their wing and teach us."

Celebrating Women in STEM
More than 50 engineering and computer science students attended the 12th Annual Women in Engineering and Computer Science Luncheon hosted by First Year Connections and dedicated to celebrating the new cohort of women students at the DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science.
The event, which has doubled in size since it launched in 2007, is an opportunity for female first-year students to talk with their older peers about classroom experiences, career goals and strategies for success in competitive, male-dominated STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields.
Mechanical engineering major Katherine Ramirez ‘19 attended the luncheon.
“As a female and a minority, pursuing a degree in engineering intimidated me,” Ramirez said. “Instead of getting discouraged, I found the motivation to keep pushing and prove to society that, despite labels and stereotypes, I’m able to succeed in a challenging and prestigious field.”

Humans of Hofstra: Path to Greatness
"I felt welcome the moment I stepped on Hofstra’s campus. They really stood out that way. It felt like a good fit. Since transferring to Hofstra in the spring of 2017, I’ve taken great classes and met a lot of cool people. I’m now a mentor in Hofstra’s Transfer Peer Mentor Program. It means a lot to be able to help people who went through a similar experience to my own. If I can help someone even just a little, it’s very rewarding. One piece of advice I have for students who transfer is to get involved. That can be the best way to get to know people. I’m involved in a lot on campus, and it’s actually made me want to work in the higher ed space after college. My time at Hofstra has really helped me figure out the path I want to be on."

Study Abroad Spotlight: Amelia Beckerman
Hi! My name is Amelia, and I’m a sophomore English major and marketing minor from Princeton, New Jersey.
This semester, I’ve been studying abroad in Berlin, Germany (the coolest city on Earth). So far, the semester has been a whirlwind of new experiences. Before this trip, I had barely traveled outside of the United States, and now every weekend I can hop on a plane to a new country. I’ve eaten waffles in Brussels, visited Neuschwanstein Castle (aka Sleeping Beauty’s Castle) in Schwangau, Bavaria, jumped on in-ground trampolines in Copenhagen, and eaten fondue in Zurich. (Okay, you caught me; two of those were about food). Of course, one of my favorite things to do when I go to a new city is take a free walking tour! What can I say - I love a good tour.
Me in Brussels, Belgium, eating the best waffle of my life with this handsome fella.
Even though I spend a lot of weekends in new cities, Berlin is the best home base I could ask for. It’s a hub for everything from business to the arts. There’s also so much history here, which means there are hundreds of amazing museums to visit. In fact, people in Berlin like to boast that they have more museums than rainy days. Berlin also has a huge outdoor market every Sunday in Mauerpark. It’s full of art, jewelry, vintage clothing, and street food. In the warmer months, they do karaoke there (catch me in May, belting TLC’s No Scrubs).
Me and my new friends outside the Berlin Wall.
In addition to having the best time of my life, I’m also actually studying here. I’m in a program that does intensive German language classes, which means that I have three hours of German every morning on Monday through Thursday. I also take a literature class that focuses on books written in or about Berlin and a class about the relationship between Pop Culture in America and Europe. Even though it’s a lot of work, I love it.
Here’s a picture of me in Copenhagen, attempting to fulfill my dream of eating gelato in every European country.
Studying abroad is so surreal. If you had told me in high school that in a couple years I would be traveling across Europe with people I had just met (and having an amazing time doing it) I’m not sure I would have believed you. Even though I miss Hofstra and my friends there (and of course my fellow Pride Guides), I wouldn’t trade these experiences for the world. And sometimes I’m able to find a little bit of home here!
Is this clock tower in Bucharest, Romania, or outside of Hofstra’s student center? We’ll never know.

My Life as a Student Teacher
Hi everyone! My name is Emma Vaccaro, and I'm a senior majoring in early childhood and childhood education with a co-major of STEM!
On February 16th, I turned in my application and all the documents needed to student teach for this coming fall. So many emotions ran through my mind- first, thankfulness to all the advisors and professors that helped me become the teacher I am today.
Next, excitement; hopefully I would be placed back in the same school where I taught fourth grade. Lastly, I felt a strange familiarity, as if this was something that had happened before, because it had; I had already taught in a preschool, as well as second, third and fourth grade.
I've already learned some pretty important life lessons. An example is how Dr. Suess' book Bartholomew and the Oobleck taught me that like when making Oobleck, always have a good and quick method for clean-up. Something else that I learned while teaching second grade was to always make sure you have an explanation for everything. These, as well as the other lessons that I've learned while student teaching, are definitely important and are sure to help me in my future endeavors.
