Hofstra Pride Guide Alumni in the New York Marathon!

Everyone has heard of the New York Marathon since  it is the largest marathon in the world! A course of about 26 miles, and with over 40,000 runners and two million spectators, it truly is a huge deal! This year, one of those 40,000 runners is a Hofstra alumni and former Pride Guide Brittany Forgione! Make sure you watch the race on Sunday to see the sign our pride guides made for her! Fall Open House!

Hofstra's first Fall Open House was a huge success! Prospective students and their families really experienced Hofstra had to offer and learned a lot about us!

    To start off the day, students and their families were welcomed by the Hofstra Pep Band, to really get them excited for everything they were going to experience with Hofstra that day! After checking in, everyone got to walk the red carpet and get their picture taken with our mascots, Kate and Willie! Everybody had a lot of fun with this and one lucky person who tweeted or instagrammed their photo with #fallathofstra will win a Hofstra hoodie!From there, the opening seminar with President Rabinowitz  left a smile on everyone's faces by finishing his welcoming speech with "Our swag is second to none!" After their formal welcoming to Hofstra, students and families all split up into different seminars about their intended majors or what they would be interested in studying here at Hofstra! The communications department had their seminar as a live TV show to really set Hofstra Communications apart from everyone else! Awesome, right? From the seminars, our visitors went back to the Student Center where they could either go on tours of the academic or residential sides of campus, or they could stay and enjoy the Student Services Fair! The fair included booths from all aspects of Hofstra, like Admission, Dining Services, different clubs, Athletics, Studying Abroad, etc. Also during the fair, everyone was able to enjoy all the free refreshments (with the best cookies)and watch some of our clubs perform like the Hofstra Dance and Cheer Teams, The Dutchmen, Melody Hall, and more! Overall, everyone who attended the Fall Open House learned a lot and had a great time doing it! We are looking forward to the next one!

Fright Night!

This coming Tuesday the 29th, The Office of University Relations and the Hofstra Cultural Center will be hosting the event “Fright Night”! This is an outdoor Halloween festival and movie screening, being held on Adams Quad which is located on South Campus, that will put everyone in the Halloween spirit! Fright Night starts at 8pm, and be sure you get there at 8 so you don't miss out on all the event has to offer! From 8-9, there will events such as a costume contest, where the first place winner will receive an iPad Mini! Also for everyone who arrives before 9 pm, you will be able to also enjoy free harvest treats and activities including: pumpkin decorating, jack-o-lantern carving, candy and caramel apples, Halloween cupcakes, etc! Right after all of this Halloween fun, starting at 9, the movie screening of Scream (Rated R for violence and language) will be shown! Bring your sleeping bags, lawn chairs, blankets, etc. and enjoy the provided treats such as popcorn, apple cider and hot chocolate!

2) CAMPUS
         It is no secret to anyone that Hofstra is extremely proud of its 240-acre campus campus, which is also only 25 miles outside of New York City. South Campus is home to all the academic buildings on campus, advisement, financial aid and the Stadium! North Campus is our residential side that has all our dorms but also has our sport fields, basketball stadium, fitness center, pool, etc! However, what each side has in common is the amazing food options, which is of course so important, and the beautiful foliage Hofstra prides themselves on. From our famous tulips to the thousands of trees, campus is really something everyone has to see for themselves. Go look at any of Hofstra's students phone and I will guarantee they are still taking pictures of campus no matter how long they have been here.  

 3)OPPORTUNITY
          The opportunities at Hofstra are truly endless. Want to double major and have two minors and have three internships  You can do that here. Want to start your own club? You can do that here. Want to get involved with community service events? You can do it here. Interested in studying abroad? You can do that here. We also can't forget about all our various sports teams and the 200 student organizations run on campus as well. Inspiring Post-It Notes!

If you were on campus yesterday, I'm sure you noticed all the different post-it notes hanging up all over campus! With messages such as, “you’re amazing!” and “you rock!”, Hofstra students couldn't help but smile as they came across these notes! Wondering who exactly posted these little notes of inspiration? The answer is  Hofstra’s Student Counseling Services, who adopted the concept from the organization Be Kind. Step Up! This organization's mission is to make the campus a happier and more welcoming place by inspiring students to recognize the powerful impact small acts of kindness can have on their lives and society as whole. After all the smiles seen on campus yesterday, I would say this organization was extremely successful here at Hofstra. Sometimes we all forget how great little acts of kindness can make us feel, so yesterday's notes were a great way to remind us all to make each other smile more often! However, these notes also reminded us all that we can inspire someone else in the simplest of ways! 

Remember, inspiration can come from anywhere, even a post-it note!

3D Printer!

The students over at The Student Computing Services have gotten their hands on a new 3-D printer! How it works is the computer makes a "blueprint" of the object you want to make and from there the printer copies this blueprint and builds your object layer by layer! The best part about the Hofstra 3-D printer is that there is no cost, so you can create any 3-dimensional objects you can think of! Let The Student Computing Services know if you have any awesome ideas for a print, they are also looking for new suggestions!

Standout Student: Rob Joyce

This Standout Student  has done more with his time at Hofstra than people have in a lifetime! With being a broadcast journalism major, senior Rob Joyce may be the voice behind Hofstra's radio, WRHU-88.7FM, but you can also hear Rob as a on air broadcaster for the New York Islanders! With the experience of a lifetime, Rob talks all about how Hofstra is the only school that could provide an opportunity to a 20 year old to be apart of a professional sports broadcast!
